Tote Bag Printing Guide: How to Get a Perfect Print.

Let's Create Something Beautiful!

Printing your logo or custom artwork on a woven canvas tote bag is slightly different from printing on a smooth piece of paper or a t-shirt. Canvas has a beautiful, rich texture that gives it that premium look but it also means your design needs a little love to make sure it prints flawlessly.

At CUSTA, a real human designer will always check your design and send you a digital proof before we start printing. But if you want to make sure your art is picture-perfect from day one, here is our secret recipe!

1. Text & Lines - Bold is Beautiful.

Because canvas is woven from thick cotton threads, tiny details or whisper-thin lines can sometimes get "swallowed" by the texture of the fabric.

2. Colour Matching - Contrast is King

We want your design to turn heads! To make sure your artwork doesn’t blend into the background, follow these fun pairing rules:

3. Design Placement - The Best Spot

It's tempting to stretch your artwork all the way to the edge, but remember: when your tote is full of your daily essentials or slung over your shoulder, the fabric naturally curves and folds.

4. Pick Your Printing Method

Every design is unique, which is why we offer different methods to make your artwork shine. Note: All of our custom options have a friendly Minimum Quantity of 20 pieces, making them perfect for teams, small businesses, or special events!

DTF Vs Silkscreen Printing

DTF vs Silkscreen Printing Comparison
DTF Printing Silkscreen Printing

Small to medium runs, one-off event designs. Ideal Order Size Best value at higher quantities.

Choosing the right printing method can feel like a big decision, but you don't have to guess! If you want to see deep-dive comparisons, learn how different inks interact with our canvas fabric texture, or see photo examples of DTF Printing vs. Silk Screen Printing.

Do's and Don'ts of Logo Placement on Tote Bags - A CUSTA Print Expert Guide.

Where you put your logo on a tote bag matters just as much as the logo itself. Place it wrong, too small, too close to an edge, wrong size for the bag and even a great design falls flat on the finished product.

At CUSTA, we’ve built our print sizes, placement options, and online design editor around getting this right for every customer. Here’s everything you need to know before you place your order.

Know Your Print Areas

CUSTA offers two print areas for tote bags:

Print Area Guide
Print Area Description Ideal For
Front Side Primary display area: Perfect for large, centred designs. High-Impact branding, logos, marketing messages.
Back Side Reverse side of the bag. Secondary messages, website URL, contact info.

The front side is where your main design lives. The back side is bonus real estate, don’t leave it blank if you have a website, tagline, or QR code worth sharing.

✅ DO: Choose the Right Print Size for Your Design.

CUSTA offers three print sizes for the tote bags; A4, A5, and A6 and each suited to a different design style and purpose. (add a cross link to topic 2: Easy Way to Customize a Blank Tote: A Beginner’s Guide to Hand-Painting Your Blank Tote).

Size and Dimensions Guide
Size Dimensions Best For
A4 210 x 297 mm Large display print, bold branding, full artwork, high-impact designs.
A5 210 x 148 mm Balanced logo placement, the most versatile everyday choice.
A6 148 x 105 mm Subtle logo, understated, premium feel for corporate or luxury merchandise.

1. A4 Size

2. A5 Size

3. A6 Size

The rule of thumb from CUSTA: If you want to make a bold statement for events, campaigns, or promotional merchandise go A4. If you want something professional and understated for corporate gifts, premium merchandise, or everyday carry bags, A5 or A6 is the smarter choice.

✅ Do: Keep Your Design Simple and Centred

CUSTA’s own design guide is clear on this: tote bag designs often favour simplicity regardless of industry or use. Keeping the design simple ensures the bag remains appealing for a long time and is more likely to be kept and used daily.

A clean, centred logo on the front panel is the most effective placement for almost every use case. It reads clearly whether the bag is on a table, hanging from a hook, or slung over someone’s shoulder on the LRT.

✅ Use the Back Side for Secondary Messaging

Most customers only think about the front. But CUSTA supports back side printing too. It’s an opportunity many brands miss.

Your website URL, social media handle, a short tagline, or a QR code linking to your brand page all work well on the back panel. It adds a second brand touchpoint without cluttering your main front design.

❌ Don’t: Ignore the Size Limits

CUSTA’s tote bags support A4, A5, and A6 print sizes. Designs that exceed the available print area will need to be resized before they can go to print.

The good news: CUSTA online design editor automatically shows you the safe print zone for your chosen bag and size, so you’ll see immediately if your artwork needs adjusting. No guessing, no surprises after the fact.

Don’t: Overcrowd the Design

The bigger the print size, the more space you have, but that doesn’t mean filling every centimetre. While space (or clear fabric) around your design makes the logo read more powerfully. Not less.

A common mistake is treating the A4 print area like a canvas for as much information as possible, brand name, tagline, product list, social handles, website, phone number. Pick one or two elements. Let them breathe. Your bag will look better and your brand will be remembered more clearly.

Don’t: Use the Same Size for Every Bag

If you’re ordering multiple bag formats, such as standard tote bags and smaller mini tote for the same campaign, your design needs to be proportionally resized for each format.

An A4 design that looks perfectly balanced on a large canvas tote can feel overwhelming on a smaller bag. CUSTA’s design editor handles this, just selecting your bag and size, and the tool shows you exactly how your artwork fits in that specific format.

Don’t: Submit Low-Quality Artwork Files

This one isn’t about placement but it affects how your logo looks wherever it’s placed. Low-resolution images that look sharp on a laptop screen can print blurry or soft on fabric.

CUSTA’s online design editor accepts your artwork and shows you a live preview of how it looks on the bag. If your file isn’t print-ready, you’ll see it in the preview before you ever place the order.
